My grandmother's second husband and his family fled Europe and traveled across tbe country in a carriage with oxen during WW2. His sisters were in Auschwitz as laborers (Russians). They left every Sunday for church, and that's where the family collected them to flee. The eldest stayed because she was pregnant with the baby of one of the guards and she was in love with him. They never heard from her again. Based on their stories, I spent my whole life thinking Auschwitz was just a labor camp. Imagine my surprise learning in school about how the people in Auschwitz were gassed and burned to death.
