I think it's a defence mechanism to brag with your misfortune/mistake, just like picking at a healing wound or touching a bruise.

Although technically it's not good for you, you feel the need to do it because it proves again and again that you can and will survive it.

Sorry if this sounds weird, I'm on a graveyard shift, trying to stay away by posting whatever I think.

MB sounds like my boss. Came in one weekend after attempting DIY and cutting his thumbnail in half. He put on the whole 'I'm gruff and manly and can grin and bear it' approach though.
