Protip: use system-level proxies.
Even better: host your 'protected' system in a VM and then use certain IP rules on the host machine to deny any non-VPN traffic.

Well shit... Chrome is not working with my VPN gotta switch to firefox and lock my shit down.

When I saw my public IP displayed by the tool, I had the same reaction... Well shit, time to say bye to chrome.
