From some quick research...

6 is the "perfect" number in Judaism. It is the sum of the first three numbers (1+2+3) and also their product (1x2x3). "Man" (meaning the Jews only) was created on the 6th day. Furthermore, there are said to be 600,000 letters in the Torah, "one for every Jew".

The 600,000 number is significant as well, for a Rabbinical process called Guzma, which seems to mean something like "exaggeration" but is used as a way to measure Jewish tragedy in a shoah. 600,000 is multiplied by a base number 1 to 10, depending on the severity of the tragedy. Obviously, they assigned the holocaust a perfect 10, which is how we arrive at the mythical 6,000,000, and why not even Jews believe that number to be factual.

So there you have it. Holy number, letters in the Torah, guzma, muh six brazilian.

Edit: Quick clarification, from looking through guzma some more, 600,000 does not always need to be the base number to be multiplied by 1-10. It seems 600,000 was chosen for the aforementioned Torah letters reason, but any number can be exaggerated with guzma.

I like your research. I'd like to see more like it, on different subjects.

I saw something that said that they also believe that 6 million have to "go away" or "not return" as a pre-requisite for Israel to form.

Ben Weintraub, a religious scientist, learned from rabbis that the meaning of the missing letter means the number 6 million. The prophesy then reads: You will return, but with 6 million less. (See Ben Weintraub: "The Holocaust Dogma of Judaism", Cosmo Publishing, Washington 1995, page 3. )

It's probably just about as meaningful as the Taoist/Confucius "Ten Thousand Things". Among other things, it's another way of saying things beyond counting. MANY, many many things. It's just possible that this is another of many examples of hubris among Jewish folks throughout history.

It is a form of exaggeration, and I'll bet it has some historical reasoning. If you were a Jewish peasant farmer living in Kadesh in 100 BC, you might not care too much if 400 Jews were massacred in Ephesus, 750 miles away and farther than you or anyone in your family could ever hope to travel. But if your rabbi tells you 400,000 Jews were massacred, that might convince you to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (and donate some shekels).

Has anyone located all these articles individually? I'll do it if I get the time.

It'll be interesting to read them in context.
