So.. do they want the U.S to pull out completely and state they will not intervene in the event of the North Korean attack, as it would be seen as meddling in their democracy?

Sk gaining control over nk would be disastrous for their economy. I can understand some hesitation about taking it back

There are ways around that.

The country could be put under a special administrative government, with an aim of internal development. Then, once the country had reached a predetermined threshold of progress, the process of unification between the two countries, could begin.

I don't expect Korea to be unified for at least a couple of generations after the current NK Government falls. It will take a lot of time to both develop the country and deprogram its people.
