Chesterton was a Catholic and all serious Catholics defend the Middle Ages. I would say that throughout history, most people believed anything they were told. The average person has never been intelligent enough to question what they are told. The main problem with the Middle Ages wasn't credulity, it was the centralization of religion which corrupted religion and thereby destroyed morality. In other words, the Catholic Church itself was the problem.
