you know I actually looked that up and they both mean the same thing come to find out. But according to wikipedia it has been a point of contention in the world of English grammar since the early 20th century.

whatever floats one's boat I suppose. I know I don't get to bent out of shape if the point is made and coherent. But then again I wasn't an English major.

Irrespective is likely the word you want. Irregardless is a little irregular and will draw people's ire and irritation.
