Before the renaissance and the advance of the scientific method coupled with the societal wealth to fund it, people had fewer tools with which to understand the world around them. Folklore, fables, and common sense have all been devalued in the modern era, because they were never perfect, and science has offered us so much. Hydrogen peroxide is superior to 99.99% of mosses for wounds, and I've not yet found the herbal tea which can compete with aspirin. Even so, I allege that there was knowledge transmitted through these channels of oral history that was of worth.
