One interesting thing I read was that Mississippi was the richest state at the time. Compare that today when it's poorest or second poorest.

Back then, there was no secret ballot. The people running for office would have to send people to other states to hand out ballots to turn in.

Lincoln never sent people to the southern states, so people living down there never even heard of him.
