Isn't it true that the two parties sort of switched at some point after (during?) the civil war? This never makes sense to me because being from the south has convinced me that the people here responsible for lack of civil rights and all that were not democrats. Just always confuses me.

There is a misunderstanding of what Democrats and Republicans stood for.

"Republicans" of the Lincoln party stood for Maintaining the Republican Government (big government)

The Southern "Democrats" stood for State Rights (ie secession)

After the war and the Decades after the "Republicans" became such a dominant party some of the Southern Politicians changed their affiliation in order to maintain political power. After FDR the Democrats became associated with Big Government and used it to enforce segregation while Republicans became associated with State Rights and "democratic" small state governance.

On the Congressional level however, Democrats and Republicans have always pushed for an Expanded Republican power. It's confusing because the terms don't mean shit anymore
