The more they use "white supremacist", the more people start making the distinction between white supremacist and white nationalist. The normie says, "Come on, they can't all be white supremacists. See, some are white nationalists." What I've seen from normies and the MAGApede sphere over this is a desire to not be associated with UtR. But there's still part of them that wants to make excuses for it, like by making the distinction between supremacy and nationalism or by saying the nazi elements were probably false flags. They want to believe that the right wing activism wasn't that extreme, so the media playing on the extreme elements of the rally sends normies looking at the normal alt right as an explanation. "See it's not nazis, it's just alt right". And then they learn to stand behind the alt right.
