"American" in its original context referred to any white free born person. Americans are of European stock, and our political ideology is rooted in the enlightenment and french revolution.

Why do you think people were racist against Irish immigrants or italians? When they first got here they didn't get that america was a country for any kind of european, but not specifically any european nation.

No, you have that backwards. We took nothing from them. The French Revolution took some inspiration from the American Revolution. The two were very different though, with the French Revolution being a leftist virtue-signalling death spiral.

Yeah you're right actually, it was the French crown that sent troops, and after the war we sent delegates to France. Franklin went back and forth.
