Alright, let's have that conversation.
What you call xenophobia is designed to reframe a concern for national security, not the other way around. The security of ones borders and the exclusivity of your nation and who is permitted into it is a founding notion of civilization itself. Oversimplifying it into "fear" is a shaming tactic, the same with turning people who believe in the value of having and maintaining in-groups into Hate-people or Anger-people or Fear-people. We should be endlessly skeptical of people who have been trained to rely on such infantalizing metadata to get their notions of which ideas are the Goods and which are the Bads.
As a progressive what you understand is the idea that in-groups are bad simply because they foster conflict between other in-groups, even though the existence of an in-group is the most powerful psychological shortcut to fostering cooperation within that group. Wouldn't it be better, you suppose, to just say that everyone can be part of our one big in-group called humanity? Throw open the borders, act like we have no differences, it's fine, we'll still cooperate just the same?
Except we don't cooperate just the same. Nobody is getting along because the idea of us all treating each other like we're all from the same in-group is bunk - the people we want to cooperate the most with are the people we share blood, soil and experiences with, and that must be given its due accordance. We aren't robots, preferring your own does not make you broken.
The simple fact of the matter is that what you get when you take a nation and tell it that the power and unity it had as an entity, with a culture and identity, all must be subverted in order to benefit everyone else, is a grey morass of identity-less, culture less, probity-less consumers. And most importantly, you do not get a conflict free nation. You get people who dislike each other. You get people taking issue with each other. You get people calling the treatment of others unfair, either on legitimate or spurious grounds. You get finger pointing and name calling and bombs and riots, not because any single party is full of Bads, but because we're humans, and putting large groups of vastly different people into the same borders doesn't work.
And it's not supposed to work, that's the entire point of why it gets pushed so hard in nearly every movie, on nearly every media outlet, the idea that we must all come together in this big stupid kumbia: a country with no central identity beyond the idea that every identity is welcome is a country physically incapable of coming together to resist anything. It is a nation of strangers, random disconnected individuals fit exclusively for working their McJobs, buying Coca-ColaTM and masturbating themselves to sleep. That is your multiculturalism. That is the point. There is no Russian conspiracy, there is no white supremacist patriarchy, there are just rich motherfuckers with their fingers in every pie laughing at the fact that a nation whose men once had the balls and camaraderie to go to war over fucking taxes have sat around this long doing nothing in the face of spying, assassinations, the worst corruption quite possibly ever. Because why the fuck would we get off our fat asses anymore? To defend what? Neighbours we don't care about? Not even you progressives do anything more extreme than the occasional Antifa riot, and look who you do it against. You can't even properly oppose the elite you keep saying you oppose because you intentionally ignored the obvious nationalistic perspective from which opposition to corruption always stems, and bought instead into a social dogma designed from the ground up to neuter every ounce of discipline, probity and unity you could possibly have used to ever do anything with your life. And then you blame it all on, and I shit you not, and in the face of every facet of the society you live in blaring directly into your eyes, you blame it on white people not trying hard enough.
The secret is that the nasty little plot designed to divide people?
That was you.
That was you the whole time. The entire multiculturalist meme was the division. That was the part that made it physically impossible for a populace to get along. Everything after that was just you getting increasingly angry at the fact that humans don't work like robots. You want to talk about solving problems by throwing away prosocial institutions? How about the fact that you threw away society's ability to cooperate just to pretend you could resolve conflict once and for all. And guess what? You literally increased the sum total of conflict in the bargain.
Fucking Utopianists you make the same mistakes every fucking time.
We could have at least had the conservatives but no, they had to turn out to be idiots through and through. You guys are at least smart - arrogant about what being smart actually means, and intellectually dishonest to a fault - but still smart. Conservatives just vote to keep the elite's economic powerhouse built up. That's the beauty of the back and forth - the right builds them up, and the left makes it impossible to do anything about it. NeoConservatives are the perfect opposition, even a progressive would look intellectually honest against one.
Honestly no shit people have started opting for the third option. No shit there's a resurgence in right-wing nationalism and all the "deep dark" sentiments you left-leaners thought you'd shamed out of existence. No shit people have started looking for the identity you worked to deny them. No shit people are tired of pretending everything's alright. That may just be the authentic antithesis to all this nonsense, and look, the people who built our countries from the ground up were right about human organization the whole time, who'd have thought. Buckle in because for better or worse, you can't shame your way out of this one.
