There's hate speech, and there's "inciting violence" hate speech. The latter could be considered illegal. "Shouting fire in a crowded theater" and such.

And even if it isn't illegal, the FBI will take a good hard look at you, perhaps come visit, perhaps get a warrant and give your life a good going-over.

Incitement to violence is not protected speech and never has been. You can call someone (or a group of someones) useless filth if you want, but if you encourage people to attack and kill them then you've crossed a line and the law no longer protects you.
