Speaking of Europe, most of our states are welfare states so you are able to feed them even when very poor.
Speaking of Varg...He lives in a very cheap rural part of France (land is cheap), and grows much of his own food. They also are extremely autonomous when it comes to energy (if I remember correctly they have an old school toilet without water, and use solar panels for electricity).
You can basically only do that by not living in the major cities where everyone goes...But that goes back to Varg's old school Viking ways...Live in a small village in Europe, have a tough rural life...

That tough rural life, will raise your kids to be strong and independent. I already hunt the majority of my meat. Hopefully, I can raise some chickens and goats to provide the rest. Homesteading is making a come back!
