Let's be honest though, as someone with a horrible childhood... The drugs and booze we're not a gateway... My childhood abuse was the gateway drug.

From personal experience, drugs are used as an "escape" from reality. So whatever is causing that shitty reality is the real gateway. The problem is that drugs make your reality worse which in turn makes it a self-perpetuating cycle.

People don't realize that a horrible childhood (in whatever terms you apply that- and I don't mean not getting that red pony) does indeed cause PTSD. You walk around all your life as a person with the sense that something or someone (you? them?) is fecked up yet you survive, one way or another.
