Why are there escalator broken signs?

Shouldn't they be escalator temporarily stairs?

[–] ELEVATORmenGETitUP [S] 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago

Also it would be noted they they should not be listed for emergency egress. You still need staircases.

We have similar jokes. Yes when they stop working it is a super expensive staircase

What's it like working in the elevator/escalator business?

[–] ELEVATORmenGETitUP [S] 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago  (edited ago)

I have best job I ever had. It dangerous, exciting, impressive. When the public catch a glimpse of what we do the want to take pictures. I work with some of the smartest people and some the most insane people.

You missed your opportunity to say "It has its ups and downs." Waw waw dad jokes.

Thanks for the real answer though.

I work in a similar field and there's definitely that joy in being able to walk away from a completed job with the satisfaction of contributing something that will add to productivity and be used for a long time by many people.

Are there escalators that have safety mechanisms that let them sense when something is wrong to prevent them from eating people, or is that impossible due to the need to adjust power when different numbers of people are riding the escalator?

Or I guess in general what is the state of more modern escalator safety?

[–] ELEVATORmenGETitUP [S] 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago  (edited ago)

There state of safety would rely on maintenance or state or city required maintenance. You will have most errors come from the comb plates at the top or bottom it is spring loaded to take some bumps and still run but not to exceed a certain amount of pounds per square inch as well as range of motion. The Escalator with brushes on the side skirts ( metal that comes up on each side of the step ) is a safety as well not to clean you boot but to politely keep people from standing right up on the skirt where a shoe laces can get pulled in

There are alot of safety switchs on an Escalator. I don't want you to think they are not safe but there is not way for it to tell if a Skittle fell through the unit or someone pant leg that might get pulled in

Is it true that no one has ever died from an elevator malfunction(in the US at least)? Any malfunction I guess but I'm specifically thinking of the elevator dropping enough floors and killing the occupants.

[–] ELEVATORmenGETitUP [S] 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Not true. There are deaths in this industry. Both in building/construction of them and everyday use.

Ever known someone in your field that was required to help the coroner or medical examiner fetch remains? (from escalator OR elevator)

[–] ELEVATORmenGETitUP [S] 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

Yes unfortunately. Escalator personnel and elevator personnel I work with have done this.

[–] wahala 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

Elevator question: Is it true that if you push your choice of floor buttons and the door closed button and hold them down without releasing you will get to your floor directly and bypass all the other floors, even if others have hit the button to get on? Rumors like that have been circulating my building for years now. Sometimes it seems to work, sometimes it doesn't. I tend to think it is not really a trick and that it's just lucky sometimes, but I would really like to know if this is a thing.

[–] ELEVATORmenGETitUP [S] 0 points 2 points (+2|-0) ago  (edited ago)

That is unlikely. Depends on how many elevator cars there are. That would severely affect how the cars calls are registered and dispatched.

However thru programming it could be possible. Just highly unlikely.

[–] wahala 0 points 1 points (+1|-0) ago

There are three main elevators that go to all floors and one service elevator that only goes as high as one of the middle floors. Not sure if that changes anything.

I do think this is unlikely, as you say, though. Just a matter of luck.

Is there a coin collector box built into an escalator?

[–] ELEVATORmenGETitUP [S] 0 points 0 points (+0|-0) ago

We have stainless steel pans to collect debris to make it easier to clean up and vacuum out

Next question:

Is there a standard to be met for the emergency stop button, i.e.: # of feet to full stop, # of steps... ?
