Look up soviet involvement in all N.African countries and Yemen since 1945.Major wars have been attended by Russian troops end entire squadrons of VVS posted to Egipt. Horn of Africa has also seen Russian troops and pilots with planes. Some have been there all there untill 1989.

There are a lot of publications about Cubans in Angola and other African countries.I think there is a museum and memorial somewhere in Cuba devoted specifically to them.

Chinese have been selling their arms and know-how to Africa since at least 1965.All those Kalashnikovs and SKS rifles on pictures from there?Chances are they are all "Made in China" and so is the ammunition for them.South African and Rhodesian authorities have known about this since the beginning of bush wars.

All of the above have been countered with more or less success by US,British, Portuguese and French governments. We in English speaking countries have very little knowledge of especially French efforts and they were and still are immense.Remember pictures of French fighting in Mali about a year ago or so?They are there for a very long time, off and on since 1945. Foreign Legion still has permanent bases in that part of Africa .Very few know Canadians have been there too advising and training local troops as well as leading humanitarian efforts.
