I vaguely remember doing these sort of exercises at school when I was about 9 or 10.

The one I remember most clearly was something like.. "You are a crew member on a sinking ship. You are the only person on your lifeboat that can navigate to a nearby island. So you are in charge and you are indespensible. The lifeboat only has food/room/water/fuel to take 12 passengers to the island.. Anyone you leave behind will probably die.. Here's a list of the 20 people who want to get on the lifeboat, including a description, their occupation and a few personal details.. Who do you take with you, who do leave?"

Does anyone know what these questions were called, what their purpose was? Even at the time it seemed really weird to be asking 9 year olds about who's life is more valuable. I know they stopped after a few parents complained.

I don't think I ever experienced such a thing but I would like to know more about this.

Or, if I go alone, I have food, water and fuel for 12.
