$10/h is minimum wage here in CA. Our employment is also at-will. We know this job sucks, and it's an entry level position. Most of the people working here move on to fire fighting, PA or medical school.

what does the top of the payscale look like?

around me EMT's are all private contractors and most start out at $8

it's something I seriously looked at years ago but the pay was a turn off.

I don't know about other places, but at my company everyone is paid the same no matter how much experience or time with the company. The only increase to pay is if you move to a field training officer position, and it's only $100 more a paycheck.

For reference, after taxes I make about 1150 per paycheck.
