How do you keep from having mental breakdowns from seeing the trauma you must run into from time to time? Is it a certain type of person who can do your job?

Yes, it takes a very specific type of person to do this. And many don't realize it until it's too late. I get through it because I just know it's part of the job. I'll do my best and that's all I can do. Shit sucks, but it's life.

One of my coworkers quit his first week on the job because a baby died on one of his calls. He felt guilt that he directed the driver on the round half of a road, and added two minutes to their response time. He didn't cause the kid to die, but he felt too guilty about it and it ate at him.
