What happens if you further injure somebody during routine treatment - breaking ribs during CPR for instance?

It's expected to break ribs. In your first 1-5 compressions if you haven't felt anything snap, you aren't compressing hard enough.

Obviously we aren't trying to further injure anyone, but if side effects from treatment are worth it, we do it.

Nitroglycerin gives many people a raging headache when administered, but it helps to open up cardiac arteries in a heart attack so benefits outweigh the headache pain.
