I honestly read the title as "I am a Failure. I run an IRC server and somewhat help the devs of Voat". I came here to say that's pretty cool so don't beat yourself up about it! ;)

Out of interest what's the state of IRC users these days? I used to use it an aweful lot many years ago (I think the client that introduced me to it was mirc) but even back then I could see the general channels drying up somewhat. I would love to dive back in if it's still a pretty used space but don't really know where to start.

It depends on where you look. Rizon seems to hold a lot of the general chat nowadays, Freenode holds the tech areas, and Efnet holds the classic IRCers. Yes, IRC seems to be slowing down, but it wont be dead for a very long time- if ever. Its arguably one of the best and most simple chat protocols out there and has been time-tested and is well known. However, for a community, a small IRC server is a great place to be, where everyone knows everyone. For voat stuff, I'd recommend goatchat, as my server is less voat-oriented.

Thank you so very much for that detailed response Failure, I really appreciate it and will definitely check those places out! A few months back a couple of co devs I was talking to mentioned an IRC channel they religiously used and I picked back up an IRC client and got totally lost (it was literally years ago I used it last) but I will definitely have a suss this week now you have thrown me a starting point.

All the best bro ;)

Voat fucked up your link, so I'm going to try and fix it for lazy people like myself.

This might take you to goatchat.
