Failure is genuinely one of the nicest people on voat. If you ever need help with tech stuff, best goy to ask!

Also, why is Arotaes so annoying?

@Failure

Hi. Beta_alt said you're good at tech stuff so i thought I'd ask you for some tech advice. I am trying to build my micro nation on mars. It would be a self-sustaining colony of about 100 people at first with plans to expand it to 1000+ people. I'm good with mechanics but lacking in electronic as software department and have never built a spacecraft before, let alone a mars colony. But since you're good at tech stuff + nice maybe you can help. Do you have any schematics of space rockets or colonies that you've built in the past and would be wiling to share as "old tech"?

I wasn't in the rocket part, but you can use a rail gun-like setup in a loop to accelerate small packages to bombard the surface of Mars with supplies beforehand. Once there, use liberal amounts of RTGs using plutonium and the in-development thermophotovoltaic cells. Each of these should produce a lot of heat, or about 1000+ watts every hour. Food should rely on fatty foods and strategic application of Mars soil to grow high-density foods. Water can be obtained via ice sheets + RTG heat.

I honestly read the title as "I am a Failure. I run an IRC server and somewhat help the devs of Voat". I came here to say that's pretty cool so don't beat yourself up about it! ;)

Out of interest what's the state of IRC users these days? I used to use it an aweful lot many years ago (I think the client that introduced me to it was mirc) but even back then I could see the general channels drying up somewhat. I would love to dive back in if it's still a pretty used space but don't really know where to start.

It depends on where you look. Rizon seems to hold a lot of the general chat nowadays, Freenode holds the tech areas, and Efnet holds the classic IRCers. Yes, IRC seems to be slowing down, but it wont be dead for a very long time- if ever. Its arguably one of the best and most simple chat protocols out there and has been time-tested and is well known. However, for a community, a small IRC server is a great place to be, where everyone knows everyone. For voat stuff, I'd recommend goatchat, as my server is less voat-oriented.

Thank you so very much for that detailed response Failure, I really appreciate it and will definitely check those places out! A few months back a couple of co devs I was talking to mentioned an IRC channel they religiously used and I picked back up an IRC client and got totally lost (it was literally years ago I used it last) but I will definitely have a suss this week now you have thrown me a starting point.

All the best bro ;)

Voat fucked up your link, so I'm going to try and fix it for lazy people like myself.

This might take you to goatchat.

If you have link associations set up, this should bring you to it
If not, then it is:

irc.orderofthetilde.net
6667
#orderofthetilde

Why are you wasting time supporting this den of alt-right pedophiles?

Are you one of them? You are, aren't you?

So...Do you have the IRC server linked to voat and announce the posts in a voat channel or something? How is your IRC server helping this site? Which channels are busy?

Not really, my server was originally run by @moe before the first few influxes, so most people on it no longer use Voat. It's just something I do, kinda unrelated.

So what does it take to run it? Seems pretty easy if it's just a connectable host.

Care if others run tests in their own channels? It's been so long since I've kicked it on irc...may need to brush off the commands list.
