I use public transportation wherever possible and have been on 9 container ships in addition to that.

The project was sponsored between October 10th 2013 and March 2016 by Ross Offshore. Since then it has been self funded and that isn't going to work much longer. So either a new sponsorship or crowdfunding...

how do you book a ride on a container ship and how far in advance?

It depends. Booking isn't exactly what I do. I request passage...and if the shipping line and the captain agrees then I get a confirmation.

I've never had anything arranged more that 2 months in advance. And usually I get onboard only a few days after I've received permission. It's tricky, difficult and uncommon. But doable.

There are however some ships that make a business out of it and you can book a cabin online. I've never tried that though.
