I cannot help thinking about how these cars will be refuelled. Hydrogen is very explosive, imagine a semi drunken driver trying to refuel his car and blowing half the street up through one small accidental spark? I am an aircraft fitter and Murphy's law is in my blood.

Everyone should be concerned with the safety of whatever they are driving. Toyota, Hyundai and Honda especially, because if they sell an unsafe car they will ruin their reputation and end their experiment with hydrogen fuel cells immediately. These hydrogen cars have gone through quite a bit of testing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LTlF8ndygU
Hyundai started leasing their Hydrogen car last year and so far there have been no major incidents that have been reported. Honda has had a Hydrogen car on the road since 1999 (source) . Also, Honda has had a CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) car on the road for a long time (now discontinued) and there have been no major safety issues, at least that I'm aware of.
There are thousands and thousands of forklifts that have been converted from batteries to hydrogen fuel cells. They refuel these forklifts from H2 tanks on site, and again no major safety issues TMK so far. Plug Power keeps selling WalMart fuel cells.

Dr. Michael Swain from the University of Miami did a study in 2001 comparing the safety of hydrogen and gasoline:
Hydrogen Car Fire Surprise - Video documents results of hydrogen and gasoline car fires. http://evworld.com/article.cfm?storyid=482
TL:DR- Hydrogen is safer than gasoline
Remember that people all over the world store highly flammable Propane in 250, 500 and 1000 gallon tanks, sometimes these tanks are 20 feet from a house. And sometimes they do blow up, but propane is more dangerous than hydrogen because propane sinks and hydrogen rises into space at 14 MPH.
