This article is kind of incomplete. I debated with myself about posting this one, but seeing familiars as friends and not servants is often overlooked. The tv and movie depictions of paganism is nothing like te real thing. The concept of fetches is fascinating, isn't like a doppelgänger with more self awareness. They remind me of the Daemons in the Golden Compass books.

I've never read the Golden Compass books so not aware of that depiction. I have had many animals around during my lifetime. Horses, cows, ducks, chickens, dogs, cats, hamsters, snakes, etc. - But I've only experienced one animal (a cat, coincidentally) that felt completely sentient and aware. I swear he understood English and fully grasped our conversations. His behavior was very odd and human-like and I think of him when I hear the term "familiar". Maybe there is a small percentage of animals that have extra high IQs, just like humans, and when we meet them it feels supernatural.

I've known one person who claims to have met their "Fetch" and that was a seemingly supernatural experience. This animal appeared in a crowded city area, but all other traffic and people disappeared. The animal appeared and disappeared after the interaction and it was very "other worldly", which seems more like the mythical descriptions I've read. This person's Fetch was also covered in blood, which in the writings I've seen is supposed to portend that person's death, but they are still alive so that didn't follow the storyline.
