Not as nice as the double decker lounge cars on Amtrak's Pacific route today.

A couple of years back I took the California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco. It was as nice as the picture. The trip included three meals a day in the dining car and a private sleeping car. Amtrak, especially out west is not necessarily a cheap way to travel. It was mostly retirees and train enthusiasts. The stretches just east of Denver and through the Sierras are stunning.

I rode that Amtrak in 1991 with my wife and two children. We had a cheerful black waiter with an easily remembered name who kept us entertained with his banter. 3 years later, my wife and I broke up. To clear my head, I went on an Amtrak trip and met up with a hottie on that same train. We went for breakfast in the dining car and there was the same waiter. He looked at us both, then looked at me and said That's not your wife!

It was impressive that he remembered my face after 3 years. Even more impressive was that he had the moral courage to challenge my behaviour. Few people of any race would do that. He was protecting the virtue of my breakfast partner too. Of course, I had already explained my situation to the lady, so I was not at all embarrassed.
