Watched that movie in my NYC history class in HS. So, so inaccurate in so many ways. Draft Riots didn't happen like that at all - but that movie was riveting as fuck. I think the most accurate part of the movie is the set design for the Five Points, notorious slum that... might've deserved the reputation. Of course, there's some exaggeration with the violence and everything (also the high chinese population that kept walking around did not exist), but purposeful on Scosese's part. I can't remember much more about what we talked about... it was a few years back
And you're right... wrong time periods... oops... purposefully. Scorsese wanted to create something exciting, and he did, but he had to move the opening of the theater thirty years back to fit it with the Draft Riots...
Edit: one more thing! Bill the Butcher totally existed but once again, the time was... also a bit off.
