The Johnson family has a long and distinguished tradition of wrestling as part of the Anoaʻi Family.
Rocky Johnson (b.1944) is a retired Canadian professional wrestler. A Black Nova Scotian, he is descended from Black Loyalists who emigrated to Nova Scotia from the United States after the American Revolutionary War. At the age of 16, Johnson moved to Toronto, Ontario, where he began wrestling and worked as a truck driver. Initially, he trained to be a boxer and eventually sparred with greats such as Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. During his wrestling career, he became a National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) Georgia Champion and a NWA Southern Heavyweight Memphis Champion, as well as winning many other championships. Along with his partner Tony Atlas, Johnson was a part of the first black tag team to win the World Tag Team championship in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (b. 1972) is an American and Canadian actor, producer and semi-retired professional wrestler, signed with WWE. Johnson was a college football player for the University of Miami, winning a national championship on the 1991 Miami Hurricanes football team. He later played for the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League. As of July 2016, he has had 17 championship reigns in WWE, including 10 as a world champion, winning the WWF/E Championship eight times and the WCW/World Championship twice. He won the Intercontinental Championship twice and the WWF Tag Team Championship five times. He is the sixth Triple Crown Champion in WWE history, and won the 2000 Royal Rumble. The Rock is considered by many to be the biggest superstar in WWE history.
The Rock's maternal grandfather "High Chief" Peter Maiva was a Samoan professional wrestler and a promoter for the National Wrestling Alliance in Hawaii. His wife, Lia Maiva was one of wrestling's only female promoters and worked closely with the (WWE) World Wrestling Entertainment during her career.
