A big health insurer is planning to punish patients for 'unnecessary' ER visits - LA Times

'Insurers and government authorities have pondered for years how to stem unnecessary ER visits. '

'After a court rejected the proposal, the program developed a list of 500 diagnoses for which it would deem ER visits unnecessary and wouldn’t pay. '

'Six of the 10 top reasons for unnecessary visits, including back, abdominal and chest pain and sore throats and headaches, were also among the top 10 symptoms of real emergencies. '

'It’s a new wrinkle in the age-old problem of how to keep patients from showing up at the ER for just anything. '

'The “prudent layperson” language was written into the Affordable Care Act to protect patients, not subject them to retroactive second-guessing. '

A lot of things should be handled by your family doctor. The ER is for 'Emergencies' not normal wear and tear.

Don't know about big cities but I'm in the sorta county/suburbs. You can't go any distance without hitting a Urgent Care facility. Are they counting those as ERs?
