He's not wrong, but there are different ways to structure the "game," so to speak. Ideally, you'd want to set the game up as cooperatively as possible. There's always going to be room for exceptional people to stand out, and by no means should they be hindered from doing a fantastic job and getting rewarded for it, provided they don't knock others down to get ahead.
I agree that collaboration and competition work great together. Our culture is very much a competitive one and is eager to say, "Fuck you I got mine" and neglect the consequences of how a floundering group might drag them down. We need to change that.
