My interpretation is that he's referring to the habit of over thinking normal social situations. Instead of relaxing and doing what comes naturally, you might be consciously reminding yourself to act normal, smile at appropriate times, nod, and maintain appropriate body language. Naturally this takes a lot of energy, which is why introverted people tend to feel exhausted after a lot of socializing.

Creative people have considerable difficulty in stifling their creativity. They do it with a thoughtlessness on par with breathing. Then they get punished for it when they do it in places that demands conformity and orthodoxy. Then they start checking everything they say and do, which is exhausting.
