Confederate soldiers fought just as honorably as Yankee soldiers. Why they were fighting was beyond their station, they were defending their homeland, and doing their duty for their country. I highly doubt the question of slavery even came into their mind.

Now we got a bunch of crop eared puritan witch burners acting like they never burnt people at the stake, or had any slaves up north.

If you go to Gutenberg.org, and search on Slave Narratives, you can read 1000's of interviews that were done about 1937 of slaves. And most of the interviews, or a great deal of the reveal that the slave loved there white people, and were treated very well. And the white people took very good care of their slaves.

Some of the interviews are pretty entertaining, especially when the slave talking about their superstitions. This one story I was reading last night this slave tells about Haints. When I was just a young boy, we always had a black lady watching us during the day, and at night when my parents were gone. Annie, Johnny Mae, Joe (Joe killed her husband with a pocket knife), we were scared of her, and then Dorothy. And I think it was Annie use to talk about Haints (aberrations), that I always though of a angry ghost.

When he cotch us, us wuz all punished wid a hard long task. Dat cured me o' believing in any conjuring an' charmin' but I still kno's dat dare is haints; kaise ever time you goes to dat gully at night, up to dis very day, you ken hear hogs still gruntin' in it, but you can't see nothing.)
