I think we do need some sort of insurance because we can't know how our health will progress through our lives. We can take all the precautions in the world and still have complications. Luckily those people would be outliers in a fair system, unfortunately the system is not fair and administrative bloat and fraud force insurance to be expensive. Still you should be responsible for your own health, you will invariably do a better job than the government ever could.

Medical insurance could maybe be changed to be primarily for unexpected big procedures, like open heart surgery for example. So it would be more like fire insurance.
Government could also reduce the cost of other medical care by standardizing health, nutrition, prevention to be taught in medical schools.
