Just to be clear, patents mean almost nothing at all.

That doesn't mean you actually have a working prototype. It doesn't mean that you're going to use them in the future. It doesn't mean that that's the future of technology.... It doesn't mean much of anything at all. Anytime someone comes up with a novel idea, and they have the lawyers and the cash, they will put in for a patent immediately so that they can defended it later on if it does end up being something big or useful.

I have several friends that have numerous patents between them and almost all of them are completely and utterly useless.

It's a bad idea to conflate your friends useless patents with our military's.

We know that "they" have technology far beyond what the public knows about. It makes sense that they would file the patent after R/D and proto has been proven and built...since we also know that the patent office has been compromised, patents stolen and prolly sold to China (or other enemies). It's highly unlikely that the Navy is going to file a patent on something that is theory for our enemies to steal and copy.
