I have come to the theory that, while the initial charge of the CIA and its original architects were intent on patriotic actions, they eventually were co-opted. The overthrow of Mossadegh was a huge success, at the time, and it happened for a pittance. Imagine what else the CIA could do with even more funding?

But funding was limited through Congress so they explored other ways to get it. It was not (initially anyways) about lining their own pockets but sculpting the world to be better for America. They got into drugs, arms and perhaps even human trafficking as it provided funds and probably rationalized that they are the good guys and ends justifies the means.

But when they took down a US President, that was a line there was no going back. Now the organization is all about protecting itself and the people involved and not about protecting the US.
