If you have not yet read Putt's recent announement I suggest you do so. Within it, in addition to providing a promising update on Voat's condition where the porting is concerned, he also revealed that Voat's primary credit card processor will be discontinuing its relationship with Voat on July 14th -- the day before next month's reminders are due to go out. This means the pings we sent out on the 15th of this month will be the last pings sent out during a time when credit cards -- either pre-paid or personal -- will be an option.
Unless some other options are found, this will leave cryptocurrencies as the only means of donating to Voat. This was actually the case back when PayPal discontinued its relationship with Voat, until CC payments were introduced. But now CC payments will soon be gone, too. Sigh. Goes to show how dangerous freedom of speech is to those with power.
My point is, if you dedicated goats want to continue helping to keep Voat alive, you may have to look into a cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. I am doing so presently. I have never used a cryptocurrency before but I have wanted to learn to for many months now. Nothing could more effectively force me to learn now than Voat relying on our ability to do so.
I suggest people subscribe to subverses such as /v/bitcoin, /v/cryptocurrency, /v/litecoin, /v/ethereum, or whatever form of cryptocurrency you would consider using. There is value to having control over your own money, and cryptocurrency provides that to us.
I am also looking into finding a VPN service to use -- something I should have done long ago -- in order to protect my IP address when using BTC. I suggest others look into this as well. The people in /v/bitcoin and /v/cryptocurrency know far more about this stuff than I do.
Tough times are ahead but with the port work Putt has done our monthly costs will be going down soon, but it is still critical enough of us provide support each month. I won't let Voat and Freedom of Speech go down without a fight.
