It should be both. If everyone can devote $5 a month (and I do mean EVERYONE) then have the port switch, we have a greater chance of stalling the termination of our beloved internet home.

Addendum: is there any way we can make voat a decentralized platform i.e. lbry.io?

Thats about 1500 subscribers. But I still wonder what the $6k is for...

You gotta remember, he's the one true admin. I'm sure we cost him more than just bandwidth, hosting, and grey hairs. They probably cover a livable wage as well, or Azure is charging him extra for the sheer volume of the site.

Exactly, it should be both. Get costs down and raise up enough money to keep the website alive plus have a budget in place to account for things like growth, etc.. and to have a little in reserve in case of a rocky month or two or an unexpected expense.

This hosting cost is absurd.

I have no idea how and where 6k is coming from. 12k buys you bandwidth for a school district of around 15k users with heavy data usage. I'm talking pulling in a dedicated fiber line! Lol! A server room is way more obviously ;-)

Where I work now $300/month would probably cover voat. A few boxes we have easy match coat's usage.

I would say at least a third is bandwidth, but I have not looked into the data usage of this site. Do know that a school is very different in how they work in that majority if data is downloaded, not so much uploaded. In Australia this makes a very big impact on price. Do not know about other places. Honestly, it would be the licensing. All the price is going down that drain.

This is all speculation though. Putt needs to make all the calls, we cant do shit unless he makes a decision.

Need to think long-term and have an exit strategy since putt isn't really forth coming with info.

Long Term, look at what all the major news sites are doing. They're working on a subscription basis, why not have those that use voat regularly donate $5 bucks a month. Make voat a not for profit and then the cost goes down.

Both. Even if the site has to experience downtime, we absolutely need this fixed. It's not like we will give up on the site if it has to go down for awhile. One of my other favorite sites went down for about 2 months last fall, and everyone rejoiced when it came back up. No users lost.

Voat will just run on even numbered days.

Both. Get the site costs down to an efficient level then let the users support it.

But putt is saying 6k ... and hasn't reached out to the community for code help ... makes you wonder ...

For some reason I'm totally guessing 1k would make sense ... but this just a gut estimate based on my own delusional idea rather based on experience.

Reddit did have a fork that was going the bitcoin way but the code didn't look like there was much in the repo to work with when I last checked. This would be an awesome thing to do though!
