Probably because it once used to be seen as more 'legitimate' than 'professional' gaming journalism. If the Kotakus and IGNs of the world are scumbags, then supporting average Joes makes some sense.

Unfortunately, people realised that this was a quick money making opportunity, and the same sort of corruption hit the world of YouTube gaming videos as it did traditional journalism.
