I will never understand how or why this phenomenon of telegaming ever took off in the first place.

Probably because it once used to be seen as more 'legitimate' than 'professional' gaming journalism. If the Kotakus and IGNs of the world are scumbags, then supporting average Joes makes some sense.
Unfortunately, people realised that this was a quick money making opportunity, and the same sort of corruption hit the world of YouTube gaming videos as it did traditional journalism.

Why don't they just advertise appropriately? I'm sure there are advertisers that don't mind being advertised on that kind of content.

Because then the Council of Trust and Safety can't block "objectionable" content for the programming of the People's Revolutionary Army of America.

Yeah, that's a good point. Mr Enter said it in his video on the subject. If people are willing to advertise in Family Guy or South Park (or more extremely, Brickleberry or Mr Pickles), then the same ads can be shown by many of these videos.
Or for a lot of M rated games, why not advertise other games with similar themes? It can't be hard to say, find videos of Call of Duty and run ads for Call of Duty and Battlefield games next to them, right?
