I hate reading. It's basically for faggots. However, I was trapped in a foreign land where I couldn't read local literature and I got the first book. I read it. I traveled about 80 miles to get the others. I am now reading them again for a second time.
There's lots of detail and it's about 65% the same story as the show. And George RR Martin can be a terrible, terrible writer (much and more, little and less, half a hundred, washed down with). His descriptions of food are the foul dreams of a man who can't cook. I wonder that he's fat. There's also a lot terrible, weird sex. Cersei goes lesdom, Danerys lezzes out, Samwell and the lactation fetish. It's pretty cringy and I'm always aware that this is essentially the spank bank of a lard. All of that being said, there's an aspect of mythology, ambiguity, and world building that's very enjoyable. The show doesn't really present that. The show is devolving into a CGI budget.
If you read the books, then you can enter the debates of fan theories (which reminds me -- I need to check up on Reek at westeros.org).
tl;dr: I hate reading. I willingly read the books a second time.
