I think you'll find this behaviour is now typical from Google.
They have a very useful yet slightly niche feature in a product which they remove in an update, any attempt to get an answer about the missing feature from Google will be met with "We care and are looking into the issue" when in reality they could give a fuck.
Off the top of my head I can think of some examples:
Edge swiping to switch tabs removed in Chrome(android), Stop download button on youtube removed, Removed swiping to archive in Gmail app on android.

Yeah, the bullshit PR-speak pisses me off as much or more than their removal of the choice.
