Perhaps an open tracker of public domain content would be more appropriate? That way people can D/L what they want. I'd be happy to seed if you set one up. Note http://academictorrents.com/ as an example of this.

thanks for the suggestion. I guess now we should decide on what will go into it. I think that there should be a 'master list' in the collection with a short blurb saying 'for word processing, this libre office is such and such, for ebooks use this link to Project gutenburg, etc, etc" I have no problem writing that up once I know more about what to put into it.

This is a German site which offers a DVD of a great number of open source programs. It started listing open source games a few years ago. I haven't seen anything similar to this anywhere else.

As you stated updates are a problem in torrents. Also there are already services for most of the use cases you mentioned. For music there is Jamendo, for books project gutenberg, for movies Vodo, for programs Github or any Linux or BSD distribution

I was already aware of Gutenburg, and even though this torrent wont have 'everything' it could definitely have a directory or list inside it pointing to those collections.

We could make mutiple suites, Like a zip or torrent with a "Creativity/Office" suite with LibreOffice, GIMP, InkScape, MyPaint, etc.

Then we should maybe just open upa server of collected public domain and creative commons music, instad of people having to go around and collect it, they can upload it to a server, same goes for public domain images and film.

Although, I have been wanting to build a one download suite of free productivity programs for a while now... so I would be down with working on that one first...

Mininova specializes in legal torrents and will even seed it for you under their content distribution partnership. Perhaps we could distribute it there as opposed to the illegal torrent sites?

I could get the music, movies, and books part but games are kind of a waste most repos have it included.

exactly. there is plenty of redundancy when it comes to collections of various entertainment media. This isn't meant to be a collection of everything, just a sizable torrent of something a person could legally torrent and be happy with, a taste of free, guilt-free data.

You could curate a torrent of stuff you like, sort of like a monthly newsletter. It'd be a great way to discover new things.

Actually, I'm semi-tempted to try this myself...!

I'm not sure what the point is in just having a bunch of stuff in a torrent for the sake of downloading data legally.
