You probably don't want control over the modem. It's a radio transmitter that is capable of generation many legal actions against it's user. If it ever caused trouble on the cable companies line, I don't want to be the one that placed software on it. It's not your line outside and that's where it's transmitting.
An opensource router does make sense. The wire in your house is your network. Run it as you see fit. If it's connected to an outside line, part of it is not.

It probably is flakey after 2 years without updated. Luckily it's not your problem. The firewall on the router should not trust anything from it, even if it was updated and more secure. If it's an approved, certified, or rented modem, it's the cable companies problem.
The firewall should block all private address from the modem, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_network, and everything else is the hostile Internet. Everything from the modem is hostile, or wrong, or both.
