I'd be completely fine if Serenity weren't considered canon. There was a petition that had the idea that Serenity could just be like some dream of River's or something. I think this could work. Serenity just doesn't feel the same as the show. The characters didn't seem to be quite the same characters. Also, Serenity breaks canon anyway; Simon never knew they were turning River into a psychic, and he wasn't all that involved in breaking her out.

If Serenity is taken as no more than a mere dream, Book and Wash should not need to be brought back to life somehow; they would have never died.

You make some valid points. One of the things I really disliked was the difference in the way Mal treated Simon (and by extension, River). During several of the series episodes, Mal repeatedly said that Simon was part of his crew. In the movie, he is blatantly in Simon's face about NOT being a crew member.

As much as I hate to say it, I wouldn't. I love both characters (especially Wash), but I've come to accept that they are gone...bringing them back would be cheap.

Ron Glass is dead, no way to bring back Shepard Book now.

RIP Ronald Glass...

The whole show thrived on dark realities. Which is also why FOX rejected it in the first place. To bring characters back and be happy go lucky would only weaken the story's adherence to that rule.

As much as I like them, I wouldn't want Wash and Book back. However, they could use them for flashbacks.

reboot? A reboot is a way to abandon current canon. So ...really, if you reboot it, you could just make it so they never died to begin with.

Reboot.

The rule in cinema that in recent years of films & games has been violated so much is unless you see the body, no one is guaranteed dead. In the case of Firefly/Serenity, we saw the bodies.

Maybe Book's mysterious past has something to do with clones?
As for Wash, they faked his death. Not his injuries, but his death. He ends up surviving as a paraplegic.

Book's mysterious past could account for it.
