In America at least it's due to fear of lawsuits. Someone gets sick from something and bam, a lawyer is made richer. idk about France. Pretty stupid really. A loaf of bread a day out of date isn't 'bad', maybe a little stale, but certainly edible.

In Canada (I know it's not the US but...) lots of drop-in centres and food banks get their food via donations from farmers, local bakeries and other stores.

The fuck? So the homeless can litigate but can't afford rent?

You make a solid point that I didn't think about but even use-by dates have a factor of safety.

This is why 50% of food, worldwide, goes to waste.
