There was a national upset when Cassius Clay renamed himself Muhammed Ali at the height of his fame. There was also an Islamic revival in the 90's among some of the hip-hop community, Talib Kweli etc., a lot of which was inspired by Malcolm X (who later renamed himself el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz) as a reaction against white American Christianity. It has been building up for some time.
For fun here's a wiki-list of celebrity Muslims, I was a little surpised to see Dave Chappelle, he doesn't really mention it:
