I'm new to Ethereum but not new to blockchain stuff. I have had a bitcoin and litecoin wallet for a few years now. The kind you download the entire thing and always sync up when you open it. I like this type of wallet because then I'm not trusting anyone else with the coins.
So I figure Ethereum should be the same idea. I download the Ethereum Wallet from their main site. The GitHub one with mist version 0.8.10 and put it on my C drive by mistake (which was okay in the end). The thing starts to sync up and then would stop. So I restarted it a few times. Gets to some random sync number and stops. I try this for 2 days and then out of the blue the wallet wants to do an update so I let it do it. Then re-try the sync. The sync starts to work and goes on for a day before getting bogged down slow. Read the wiki page and this is expected between certain blocks since there was an attack on the network a few months ago. The wallet then take about 3 days to clear those blocks and ticks along till done. About 5 days.
During this time I notice that I did install it on my C drive which was running out of space. I got the wallet to just fit with a couple of gigs left. So I then decide to move the thing to my other larger drive and there is a way to do this with a trick short cut through Windows. So I get it moved and the move works and then I go to sync it just to make sure. Takes super long to sync just a few blocks. So it turns out that the drive I moved it to was a mechanical drive and not SSD so this causes it to go way slow.
Bitcoin and Litecoin run off my mechanical drive and have no slowness syncing.
So this Ethereum Wallet is turning out to be a big pain. I don't like storing coins online with someone else. Any suggestions as to an alternate wallet that might work okay off a mechanical drive?
