Self tapping & self drilling are 2 different types.

Self tapping for thin gauge sheet metal

Self drilling for thicker metal

those self drilling screws aren't much good with anything thicker than 3/8"

There are also self-tapping screws/bolts for thicker metal

I can't spell anyway, apparently. I was mostly being cheeky, but I learned something today.

As a fabricator, fuck engineers. Get your ass out on the floor and actually build something every once in awhile, see what a nightmare it is deciphering your shitty drawings.

Agreed. As an installer, troubleshooter, and repair man, they are fucking out of their mind. "Built in fireplace that will be mortared into place? Lets put the access to repair and replace all of those parts that go out every 3-5 years on the bottom or back of the unit. Easy day."

Fucking tards.

The only ones I've met in my career that got their hands dirty weren't the top ranking engies, they were the successful ones.

30 years in the industry, 15 of them running production, the other 15 as an engineer.

And by production, I mean 3 years on manual lathes and mills before I was allowed on any CNC equipment - I still know how to single point threads, trig out a bolt circle, use a sine plate, and look at a handful of chips to diagnose tool wear.

Maybe I'm the exception, but I always make it a point to ensure every design I work on has manufacturability as the top priority - If it can't be made easily, then it's a shit design.

as an engineer, fucking tell me when you think i could do things better. you people never suggest any way to improve anything, you just bitch about it behind our backs.

I do, but I work with hundreds of engineers a year on various job sites. And the vast majority of them either look down on you for speaking to them at all, or push the blame onto another engineer somewhere down the line.

There are cars out there with the oil filter mounted horizontally on the back of the block next to the fire wall not visible from any angle and directly over the exhaust manifold.

If an engineer needs to be told not to do shit like that they might as well just go home and let someone else do it.

I dont have the time to sit down at a computer and write you an eloquent letter with every little problem solved for you.

As above, come to the shop floor where the dirt old men with bad language are forcing soloutions after the fact

I started my career doing engineering, then moved on to the trades.

Experience with both is invaluable. Everyone blames everyone else until they get to sit and that chair and understand the problem.

You don't need to be an engineer to know these very common items. You just need to be at the very least a man worth his own salt.

I make the rounds, but they are all basically the same. Sometimes I avoid the little guys because they are nosier than fuck.

I hate slotted screws. If I was president I'd get rid of them. Try holding one on your drill tip while holding something in your other hand so you can anchor the thing.

They will never invent a decent tip to hold slotted screws.

Fuck slotted screws.

Home Depot and the stupid girl tried to sell me an electrical outlet when I asked for a socket. She argued with me about it too. Like my creativity was impaired or something.

I call screws nails all the time even though I know the difference. I am an average dumbass.
